But a growing body of research has introduced a complication: when used at the wrong time, CWI may actively work against the muscle adaptations you're training to achieve. What This Research Does Not Mean
This is not evidence that cold therapy is harmful to strength athletes. It is evidence that timing and context relative to training type matter considerably.
The evidence for CWI in endurance sport remains robust and largely positive: faster resolution of delayed onset muscle soreness, better perceived recovery, reduced markers of muscle damage, and no meaningful blunting of aerobic adaptations at the mitochondrial level. For speed, power, or skill-based sessions where neural adaptation rather than structural hypertrophy is the primary target, the cost-benefit calculation is similarly clear.
Even within hypertrophy-focused programmes, the anabolic window where CWI carries meaningful risk is relatively narrow. The bulk of the relevant signalling occurs in the first four to six hours post-training. Cold therapy used outside this window — the following morning, for example — carries far less interference with the adaptive response.

This extracts most of the systemic benefits of regular cold therapy: mood regulation via the norepinephrine and dopamine response, nervous system resilience, and inflammation management — without interfering with the anabolic signalling from Monday-Tuesday or Thursday-Friday sessions.
For athletes combining strength and conditioning work in the same programme, the approach is straightforward: use cold therapy after conditioning sessions, avoid it after lifting. Label your sessions clearly and your recovery can follow the same structure automatically.
